Denver/Lakewood Chiropractic Neurologis Speaks: How to beat belly fat – part 2

(1) Avoid fructose like the plague it is

  • Fructose converts to fat faster than any sugar
  • Fructose diables the appetite regulating signals that tell us when we’ve had enough
  • Fructose saps vitamins and minerals whereas natural sweets from fruits ADDS them
  • Fructose raises levels of triglyceride (the major form of fat stored by the body)
  • Leading products containing fructose: soft drinks, fruit juices, cookies, jams, jellies, baked good containing high fructose corn syrup (Reading labels isn’t good enough, there are tons of hidden sources)

(2) Keep away from junk food

  • The fast food industry spends more than $5 million per DAY marketing unhealthy foods to children
  • The Prevention Institute’s “We’re Not Buying It” campaign has petitioned the president to regulate companies that market to kids
  • Junk foods are a major contributor to the coming Diabetes epidemic – estimated to break the American health care system
  • Junk foods contribute to: (1) G.I. disorders such as Leaky Gut, Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Dysbiosis (2) Learning Disorders (ADHD, etc.) (3) Diabetes (4) Low immunity (5) Cognitive decline
  • Junk foods contain carcinogens (cancer causers)

(3) Keep away from seconds… You’re waist line will hate you every time.

Denver/Lakewood Chiropractic Neurologist Speaks: How to get rid of belly fat

MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE: If this is you, understanding these misconceptions can be the key to changing how you look an feel.

  • Exercise is (er…ah…) sort of a thing of the past
  • You eat a “healthy breakfast” of grains, bagels, and fruits
  • You stay away from fats like avocados and olive oil because fats make you fat supposedly
  • You load up on carbohydrates and avoid fats because carbs are “good” and fats are “bad”
  • Diet soda is “healthy” and causes weight loss so you drink lots of it
  • You can’t get motivated unless there is a lot of pressure (stress) on you
  • You exercise after eating to “burn calories off”

The 11 Easy Steps (maybe not so easy)

  1. Avoid fructose corn syrup (primary cause of weight gain), fruit juices, and aspartame products
  2. Keep away from junk food (addictive and unhealthy)
  3. Eat smaller helpings and keep seconds out of reach
  4. Obey your hunger (eat small, healthy snacks)
  5. Exercise
  6. Reduce stress – use healthy outlets for anger (like exercise)
  7. Structure meal times so you don’t go a long time between meals (or at least snacks)
  8. Always, always, always eat a protein breakfast (organic eggs, salmon, chicken, etc.) and avoid carbohydrates (no cereals or yogurt), and avoid fruits until later in the day
  9. Enjoy your food by chewing it thoroughly
  10. Drink plenty of high quality water
  11. Avoid sodas and sugar (instead eat fresh organic fruits between meals)

Reduce your chances of cancer now!

Thousands of studies tell us exactly why America has a cancer epidemic while Asian countries don’t – diet and lifestyle. Why does traditional medicine ignore these studies and teach doctors to tell their patients that the only thing you can do to prevent breast cancer is get a mammogram? There are a number of healthy habits, which are highly protective against cancer, that first world countries have stopped. We reject our native whole foods in favor of processed junk foods and we sit all day rather than exercise on a regular basis

Simple natural prevention strategies can cut your risk of cancer by 50-60%

The DO list:

(1) Take 35 I.U.”s of vitamin D per pound of body weight per day. So if you weigh 100 lbs, you would take 3500 I.U.’s per day. This supplement is very cheap and yet EXTREMELY important.

(2) Take anti-inflammatory supplements that include omega 3 fatty acids, curcumin, tumeric, etc.

(3) Minimize stress. Research shows that if you experience a traumatic event, such as the death of a beloved family member, you risk of cancer increases 12 times over the next 5 years

(4) Eat cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, and kale.

(5) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation has been linked to just about every kind of  cardiovascular, cognitive, inflammatory, and immune (including cancer) condition

(6) Exercise. One of the many ways exercise decreases you risk of cancer is by stabilizing insulin levels. Another is by reducing stress and to top it off it improves the immune system.

The DO NOT list:

(1) Do no eat eat meat from animals that are confined and fed antibiotics and growth hormones which are stored in the tissues.

(2) Do not eat trans fats. Cook with pure virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

(3) Do not eat sugar, fructose, and corn syrup.

(4) Do not eat packaged junk foods including chips, candy, and sodas.

The dangers of progesterone and estrogen creams

The use of topical progesterone creams leads to excess levels of progesterone, and as a result,  increased levels of cortisol (a steroid hormone produced by adrenal stress).  Stress is the #1 cause of females losing estrogen dominance and altered progesterone levels to begin with so in the case of topical progesterone, the cure can be worse than the problem.

The use of hormone creams leads to loss of natural production and the increased risk factors and loss of feedback mechanisms associated with elevated hormones. This is doubly true for menopausal women. Salivary tests conducted on women using hormone creams indicate hormone levels 5-20 times greater than the normal (physiologic) range. This leads to tissue saturation and accumulation. The more body fat a person has, the more hormones they can store. When a person has been using a hormone cream, the hormone levels may take months to drop.  Body fat is where the excess hormones are stored and obese persons are at greater risk for this build up.

Instead of creams, in our program, we use sub-lingual hormone drops which do NOT get stored in body fat (no weight gain) and do not increase hormone levels outside of the normal levels. On the other hand, sub-lingual drops like we use have the same advantage as creams in that they by-pass the liver and are delivered directly into the blood stream. The usage of sub-lingual hormone drops has the advantages of (1) direct delivery into the blood stream (2) don’t exceed the normal hormone range and therefore not cause the increased risks associated with impaired hormone synthesis and altered feedback mechanisms.

Note: Attempts to normalize hormone imbalances will be futile if blood sugar and adrenal problems aren’t taken care of first. Many hormone disorders are initiated by blood sugar problems. Reactive Hypoglycemia and Insulin Resistance  lead to hormonal shifts that can change a female from estrogen dominant to testosterone dominant. What happens when  the shift from estrogen to testosterone dominance occurs?

SYMPTOMS FOR MENSTRUATING FEMALES CAN INCLUDE: hair loss, facial hair growth, irritability, depression, cramping and pain during menses, scanty blood flow, heavy blood flow, pelvic pain during menses, acne, extended menstrual cycles, and shortened menses.

SYMPTOMS FOR MENOPAUSAL FEMALES CAN INCLUDE: shrinking breasts, painful intercourse, increasing vaginal pain, dryness, or itching, disinterest in sex, mood swings, mental fogginess,  and hot flashes.

A few easy tips to help you lose weight

Little known facts on weight loss:

(1) drinking two cups of water before each meal lead to a 5 lb weight loss after 3 months for obese persons participating in one study. They were also more successful at keeping the weight off. Drinking water diminishes appetite to begin with, but according to some research, drinking water boosts metabolism and results in caloric burning as well. Also, if you don’t drink enough water, you can become dehydrated which can mimic hunger. An additional reason for drinking water is that dehydration has been linked to Depression, Asthma, Chronic Fatigue, Hypertension,  and Multiple Sclerosis.

(2) Stop drinking soda. Just consuming one soda per day results in a weight gain of 1 lb per MONTH. A one soda per day drinker for one year  will be 10 lbs over weight. Subtle, even unnoticeable in the beginning, the soda habit leads to blood sugar problems including Diabetes. ALERT: dietary fat doesn’t make you fat – fructose does. In spite of all the cool, healthy looking people on TV telling you that fructose corn syrup is the same as natural forms of sugar, it ISN’T. See SCIENCE DAILY (March 22, 2010) for a Princeton teams findings on fructose and obesity. Make sure your Jamba Juice, Vitamin Water, etc. juices aren’t spiked with fructose – say no please. Limit fructose to less than 20 grams per day.

(3) Eat apples (dietary fiber for a healthy digestive system), almonds (contain omega 3 fatty acids and make you feel full without gaining weight), and organic egg yolks (help you lose weight – and no it will not cause cholesterol probelms).

(4) Eat healthy fats such as: olives and olive oil, raw nuts, butter from raw grass fed organic milk, palm oil, coconuts and coconut oil, and grass fed meats

(5) Take supplements with tumeric (curcumin) which has been demonstrated to help prevent Obesity, inhibit tumor formation, prevent the spread of cancer cells, improve liver function, improve digestion, decrease inflammation, and help prevent arthritis and Alzheimer’s Disease. WOW!

(6) Get control of your stress and emotions (easier said than done… I know), but stress is the # 1 cause of health problems in America.

Vertigo, Balance, Lightheadedness, and Dizziness

Balance problems can be the first sign of serious health problems including but not limited to: Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Tumors, Diabetes, Stroke, High Blood Pressure, etc. Early diagnosis of balance problems can be invaluable in the early detection of these and other conditions associated with  Vertigo, Lightheadedness, and Dizziness.

Usually balance disorders are not associated with the serious conditions mentioned above,  but if not treated while benign, can become pathological later leading to serious consequences such as falls. Falls are the #1 cause of death over 65 and the #2 cause of death over 55 years of age. Falls are also the #1 cause of all non-fatal injuries among all ages in America. Falls among the elderly are the #1 reason for E.R. visits and the #1 reason for admission to a nursing home (National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 2003). WOW! And here is the kicker – usually these balance problems can be improved or returned to normal if identified in time.

HOW WE TEST YOUR BALANCE

Specially designed NASA software, Comprehensive Assessment of Postural Systems (CAPS), allows  me to measure otherwise imperceptible movements a person is making. The extraordinary sensitivity of the CAPS platform detects balance abnormalities in 25 seconds. The testing is extremely accurate and the results of the test are immediate. It generates a report that quantifies a person’s balance providing us with an objective score and warning us when the results are abnormal for the person’s age, height, and weight.

If you want to put your balance to the test, come down and try it out

Why aren’t your hormones balancing out?

Sex hormone disorders, pituitary gland malfunctions, and tumors are but a few of the endocrine failures that haunt many Americans as they go from doctor to doctor looking for that little purple pill that will take it all away. Before any doctor tries to balance hormones, he/she must first address the root cause of the disorder. Attempts to normalize through hormone replacement or other types of protocols will be futile otherwise.

Most hormone disorders are initiated by blood sugar and stress abnormalities. For instance, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) will lead to failure of the adrenal (stress) glands. Blood sugar and adrenal function can be considered harmonious. One cannot have excessive stress over a long period of time without taxing insulin system, which results in insulin insensitivity. Conversely, one cannot have blood sugar dysregulation without stress on the adrenal glands and the brain area that controls them (HPA axis). Over time, low blood sugar leads to high blood sugar (Insulin Resistance) and can eventually lead to Diabetes. Insulin Resistance and Diabetes increase the potential for shifts toward testosterone dominance in females (who should be estrogen dominant) and toward estrogen dominance in males (who should be testosterone dominant).

Females who lose their estrogen dominance tend toward testosterone excess diseases such as Polycystic Ovarian Disease. Males who lose their testosterone dominance tend toward estrogen excess symptoms such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, low energy, and depression. In both instances, the triggering mechanisms start with insulin and adrenal failures

Always look for the cause of the problem. At Brown Chiropractic Neurology Clinic, we start will blood work and saliva testing to pinpoint the exact stages of the problem and we clean up the insulin and adrenal problems BEFORE correcting the endocrine system.

A quick and easy way to find out about your heart disease risk

Body mass index (BMI) has long been established as an indicator of heart disease risk. Science indicates that the BMI is flawed, and the consensus now is that waist size is a better indicator for predicting death at an early age from Cardiovascular Disease and other complications of Obesity. Researchers have now found that people with waists larger than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men are 70% more likely to die early than those with smaller waists (Journal of the American College of Radiology). The combination of a high BMI and a large waist increased the early death rate.

What causes visceral (abdominal) fat buildup? In my opinion, it is most often the result of dysglycemia (blood sugar problems) combined with Hyper-adrenal or Hypo-adrenal function (stress). These two conditions lead to inflammation and inflammatory diseases which include type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. To make matters worse, inflammation causes some people have Leptin Resistance (your brain doesn’t get the signal that you’ve had enough to eat). Even if you are the “ideal” weight for your size and bone structure, the belly fat needs to go. Intelligent management of your diet can reduce your probabilities of inflammation, Leptin Resistance, Dysglycemia, and Adrenal Dysfunction.

How to measure your waist size: Take a tape measure and record the distance around your belly by measuring the area halfway between the lower ribs and the navel (belly button). 37-40 for men is overweight and over 40 inches is obese. For women 31.5 to 35 is overweight and above 35 is obese.

Clinical Pearls:

(1) Try to get some form of exercise every day and rotate the types of training (for instance weight training one day and treadmill the next)

(2) Cut down on fructose in the form of soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices, and processed foods (including sauces)

(3) Eat protein for breakfast because your blood sugar needs it after a long overnight fast

(4) Optimize you Vitamin D levels (for the average person, Vitamin D levels should be 50 or above). Studies show that those with low vitamin D levels have over a 300% greater risk of death from Heart Disease

(5) Lower your stress levels (this is difficult for most, but there are many good books on stress management)

(6) Make sure that you don’t have too much iron accumulating in your blood (the opposite of anemia) because this is a huge risk for heart problems.

In our office we offer specialized and extensive blood work, not usually done by your primary care doctor. We check all of your functional levels as well to catch any trends that might be developing into a health concerns.

Live longer, age slower, and reduce your risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, and more

Just by avoiding known food health dangers, you can enrich your life.

The deadly sins of consumption include:

(1) Salmon – sounds healthy and you’re not told (without asking) if the it is wild or farmed. Wild salmon gives you high amounts of essential fish oils that are needed by almost everyone in industrial societies; yet the farmed salmon are raised in crowded pens and fed chicken pellets. This process has been scientifically shown to produce PCB’s and DDT, which are harmful insecticides and chemicals. Always ask if the salmon is wild, even in nice restaurants, because you’ll be surprised how many $30 salmon entrees are farmed.

(2) Milk – cows use to grow up eating grass and producing raw milk. Now they are fed growth hormones to produce more milk (money) while passing the consequences of bladder infections and pus on to you the customer. Raw milk is the one of choice.

(3) Fruits and Vegetables – including potatoes, apples, strawberries, and grapes have been dose with so many pesticides. Organic is always best. Pesticides have been linked to a slew of diseases including cognitive problems and Parkinson’s Disease

(4) Sodas- fastest way to Diabetes, Obesity, Cognitive problems, bone loss, tooth enamel damage, digestive damage, Hypertension, Heart Disease, and on and on. Diet sodas are even worse for you, so beware the “healthy” label they wear.

(5) Beef- the highest profits are in raising corn, soy, and grain fed cattle to fatten them up and get more beef per buck. Again, organic is the way to go, it even tastes better. Some of the best beef I have ever eaten was in Costa Rica, where the cattle are fed strictly from the land.

Does it take commitment and up front expense to eat and drink properly. Yes, but the long run savings in dollars and health are astronomically greater

Exercising the wrong way can do you more harm than good

It recently came to my attention that I posted a blog about how important exercise is, but I didn’t go into the details of what exercising should look like. All exercise is not equal. The type and placement of exercises during the workout are the key to success.

Where do people go wrong?

(1) The workout can be too easy.  You may never be able to run faster or increase strength.

(2) You can over do it by training too hard and too fast. This is the biggest no no. You can push so hard that you use up so much energy and fail to get the best benefits of the workout while increasing your risk of injury.

Benefits of planned exercise:

(1) Less risk of injury and over training.

(2) More energy at the end of the workout. Very important. If you feel better at the end of the work out, you know you have hit the nail on the head.

How to do it:

(1) Warm up. Yeah, I know everyone is supposed to know this but you’d be surprised at how many are in such a hurry that they forget this important step.

(2) Muscle adaptation. These exercises include core exercises like planking, squats, and glut squeezes. This will prime the muscles to do the more intense parts of the exercises

(3) High intensity workout. Now your body is warmed and adapted so that you can go for weight lifting with leg press, shoulder press, dead lifts, squats, etc. with 3 sets of 10 reps where the weight increases from 50% of your capacity to do 10 reps to 75% of 10 reps and finally on the third set to 100% of capacity (you should fatigue at about the 6th rep of the 3rd set and when you can reach 10 reps you increase the weight and start over again at 50% of that weight)

(4) Recovery time. Do exercises that do not put stress on the joints such as knee to chest or side leg lifts. Do 3 sets of 10 reps

(5) Stretching: Stretch the muscles that have been shortened during the workout (i.e calves if you been running).

(6) Cool down. This is even more important than the warm up because muscles going from hot to cold are more likely for injury than going from cold to hot.
